Contribution of flagella and motility to gut colonisation and pathogenicity of Salmonella Enteritidis in the chicken BJM
Barbosa,Fernanda de Oliveira; Freitas Neto,Oliveiro Caetano de; Batista,Diego Felipe Alves; Almeida,Adriana Maria de; Rubio,Marcela da Silva; Alves,Lucas Bocchini Rodrigues; Vasconcelos,Rosemeire de Oliveira; Barrow,Paul Andrew; Berchieri Junior,Angelo.
ABSTRACT Salmonella Enteritidis causes fowl paratyphoid in poultry and is frequently associated to outbreaks of food-borne diseases in humans. The role of flagella and flagella-mediated motility into host-pathogen interplay is not fully understood and requires further investigation. In this study, one-day-old chickens were challenged orally with a wild-type strain Salmonella Enteritidis, a non-motile but fully flagellated (SE ΔmotB) or non-flagellated (SE ΔfliC) strain to evaluate their ability to colonise the intestine and spread systemically and also of eliciting gross and histopathological changes. SE ΔmotB and SE ΔfliC were recovered in significantly lower numbers from caecal contents in comparison with Salmonella Enteritidis at early stages of...

Contribution of Meat Inspection to the surveillance of poultry health and welfare in the European Union ArchiMer
Huneau-salaun, A.; Staerk, K. D. C.; Mateus, A.; Lupo, Coralie; Lindberg, A.; Le Bouquin-leneveu, S..
In the European Union, Meat Inspection (MI) aims to protect public health by ensuring that minimal hazardous material enters in the food chain. It also contributes to the detection and monitoring of animal diseases and welfare problems but its utility for animal surveillance has been assessed partially for some diseases only. Using the example of poultry production, we propose a complete assessment of MI as a health surveillance system. MI allows a long-term syndromic surveillance of poultry health but its contribution is lowered by a lack of data standardization, analysis and reporting. In addition, the probability of case detection for 20 diseases and welfare conditions was quantified using a scenario tree modelling approach, with input data based on...

Control of Newcastle Disease in Village Chickens AgEcon
Centre for International Economics.
Between 1983 and 1992, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) invested A$3 million in research to find a vaccine that could provide protection from Newcastle disease in chickens and be applied in village environments in developing countries. A further $160 000 was invested in follow up projects which ended in 1996. Village chickens often provide the only source of protein to poor villagers living in remote areas and Newcastle disease frequently devastates unvaccinated village flocks. The ACIAR-sponsored research was highly successful in developing a heat resistant vaccine (HRV4) which could be readily used in the field by coating it onto chicken feed. The vaccine was commercialised by an Australian company which subsequently...

Cottonseed oil in diets for growing broilers R. Bras. Zootec.
Aguiar,Vânia de Sousa Lima; Dourado,Leilane Rocha Barros; Lopes,João Batista; Machado,Luciana Pereira; Nascimento,Daphinne Cardoso Nagib do; Silva,Danilo Rodrigo Silva e; Santos,Edna Teles dos; Farias,Leonardo Atta.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of three levels of crude cottonseed oil on performance, organ weights, and blood parameters of growing broilers. Carcass and cut yields after 33 and 42 days of age and the economic viability of the diets were also evaluated. Male broilers of the Ross line were distributed in a completely randomized design, in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement (0, 2, 4, and 6% inclusion of cottonseed oil, with and without ferrous sulfate) with five replicates. In the period from 22 to 33 days, quadratic and increasing linear effects were observed on feed intake and weight gain, respectively. Feed conversion during the same period was better with the addition of ferrous sulfate. The addition of ferrous sulfate...

Criação de galinhas comuns localmente adaptadas. Infoteca-e

Cupric citrate as growth promoter for broiler chickens in different rearing stages Scientia Agricola
Brainer,Mônica Maria de Almeida; Menten,José Fernando Machado; Vale,Marcos Martinez do; Morais,Sônia Cristina Daroz de.
Feeding cupric citrate as alternative to cupric sulfate to broilers has been suggested in the literature. Day-old male broiler chicks (1,200) were used in an experiment to evaluate the efficacy of cupric citrate supplementation (75 mg Cu kg-1) during the 1-21, 22-42 or 1-42 d periods in comparison to an unsupplemented diet and a diet supplemented with cupric sulfate (200 mg Cu kg-1, 1-42 d). A randomized block design was used, with five treatments, six replicates and 40 birds per pen. The diets, based on corn and soybean meal, and water were offered ad libitum during the 42-day experimental period. Over the entire period, there was no effect of copper supplementation (P > 0.05) on bird live weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion and...

Curtailing Fertilizer Scarcity and Climate Change; an appraisal of Factors Affecting Organic Materials Use Option in Nigeria’s Agriculture AgEcon
Omotesho, O.A.; Fakayode, S.B.; Tariya, Y..
Global trends nowadays towards long term sustainable crop production is hinged on either supplementing the use of chemical fertilizers with organic materials or a complete use of organic materials. This is more so since substituting chemical fertilizers with organic materials reduces the risks of exposure to ailments that arise on account of synthetic compounds and increases farmers’ gains via reduced soil erosion and carbon emissions and increased bio-diversity. In this vein, the current study investigated organic materials use in Nigeria’s agriculture. Specifically, the study examined availability and use of chemical fertilizer and organic materials substitutes and investigated factors affecting the use of organic materials in the Nigerian food sector....

Dagens ret 4 gram larver Organic Eprints
Nielsen, Karen Munk.
Larver slutter ringen.

Urselmans, Stefanie; Damme, Klaus.

Zapf, Katja; Damme, Klaus.

Alves,Osvanira dos Santos; Calixto,Ligia Fatima Lima; Araujo,Alexandre Herculano Borges; Torres-Cordido,Karoll Andrea Alfonso; Reis,Túlio Leite; Calderano,Arele Arlindo.
ABSTRACT: An experiment was performed to evaluate the effect of decreased levels of vitamin D3 in the premix and 1,25-dyhydroxyvitamin D3-glycoside (1,25(OH)2D3-glycoside) supplementation on performance, carcass yield and bone quality in 42d old broilers. Seven-d-old male chickens Cobb500® were distributed in a randomized design with six treatments: a control diet with inclusion of vitamin D3 in the premix, without supplementation of 1,25(OH)2D3-glycoside, and five diets with decreased levels of vitamin D3 (100%, 75%, 50%, 25% and 0% about the control) plus the addition of 1,25(OH)2D3-glycoside, 50g ton-1 of diet. The main results were to reduce the tenor of Vitamin D3 in the premix when the addition of 1,25(OH)2D3-glycoside did not affect (P>0.05) the...

Demonstration-scale protein recovery by lactic acid fermentation from grass clover – a single case of the production of protein concentrate and press cake silage for animal feeding trials Organic Eprints
Santamaria-Fernandez, Maria; Ambye-Jensen, Morten; Damborg, Vinni K.; Lübeck, Mette.
There is an increasing interest in green biorefineries for the utilization of green biomass to provide a variety of valuable products. Proteins can be extracted from green biomasses such as alfalfa, clover, or grass and separated into protein-rich concentrates suitable for feeding to monogastric animals. Press cake suitable for feeding ruminant animals is also produced. Full implementation of such a green biorefinery requires knowledge and experience of production at demonstration scale. Moreover, product evaluation in animal-feeding trials requires a large amount of product. There has been collaboration in Denmark between several partners from industry and academia to assess the practicality and scalability of a green biorefining plant producing protein...

1. Organic Eprints
Schipmann-Schwarze, Christin; Hamm, Ulrich.

The case of ethical chicken production is analyzed from a systems perspective as well as from the perspective of knowledge management prerequisites of actors involved in the development. We identify the dual purpose chicken approach in the phase of sectoral fermentation, which challenges the overall orientation for the actors involved in innovation and knowledge activities. We draw conclusions for tools that could facilitate the innovation process in order to handle not-knowing, insecurity and ambiguity.
